What is National Youth Leadership Training? National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program (six days, five nights) designed to provide youth members of the Boy Scouts of America with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

Youth leadership training is a three-phase training experience, and a common thread will connect all three phases. Through activities, presentations, challenges, discussions, and audio-visual support, NYLT participants will be engaged in a unified approach to leadership that will give them the skills and confidence to lead well. Through a wide range of activities, events, games, and adventures, NYLT participants will work and play together as they put into action the best that Scouting has to offer. The Sioux Council, using a nationally approved outline under the leadership of quality volunteers, conducts the conference.

Who may attend?THIS IS A CO-ED EVENT!  The training will be open to Boy Scouts and Ventures who meet the following criteria:

  • At least 13 years old by June 1, 2010
  • At least First Class rank
  • Currently serving in a troop or crew position of responsibility (or have the skills and abilities to do so in the future)
  • Be recommended/approved by his Scoutmaster/Adviser (Experience tells us that the amount of benefit a young man or woman will get from the training is directly proportional to his/her level of maturity, attitude and focus).
  • Application is approved by the Sioux Council Training Committee.

Is The Home Scoutmaster/Advisor Involved? - Very much so. It is expected that the troop Scoutmaster, Advisor, or other designated adult scout leader, will work with the scouts prior to the conference to provide them with the basics of leadership. There are certain outdoor skills that need to be mastered prior to coming to camp. It is strongly recommended that participants be graduates of the Troop Leadership Training or Crew Leader Training. The Scoutmaster’s/Adviser’s role is critical to the success of the youth Scout leader in implementing their goals.

What uniform are Scouts expected to wear at NYLT? – Scouts attending NYLT are expected to wear the complete official field (Class A) uniform of the Boy Scouts of America which includes: Official khaki uniform shirt, Official Scout shorts or pants (shorts are strongly recommended), Scout belt, Official Scout socks, and hat.  Venture will include: Official green uniform shirt, grey pants or shorts, venture belt, and hat.

The deadline for registration is June 1, 2010. A deposit of at least $80.00 per Scout should accompany the reservation form. These fees are refundable per council policy. Space is limited to the first 36 applicants and this course is expected to fill up quickly.
