Upcoming North Star District
Cub Scout Leader Training Opportunities
Please, pass this info on to all your
Leaders & Parents in your Pack's.
________________________________________________________________________________
We have officially scheduled new Scout Training for this Winter & coming Spring in North Star District. (see the schedule) Please look over your calendars & Unit Leaders & Parents who should be attending these trainings. Please encourage everyone involved with your Scouts, to be 'Trained Leaders'. It only strengthens your program. Spring is a great time to get a 'jump start' for the leaders who will be changing positions or asked to start next Fall. You don't have to wait til next fall to get trained.
We have Cub Specifics and BALOO (Outdoor Basics) for Cub Scouts and ODLS (Outdoor Training) for Boy Scouts, and very beneficial for Webelos Leaders to take.
The Cub Specifics Training is about 2 hours. Plan on a full day for BALOO, and ODLS is a long weekend including camping 2 nights. Please plan accordingly. Please read through the decriptions of the different training available.
Because of the amount of time to prepare & materials needed it is VERY IMPORTANT to RSVP ahead of time.
For the Cub Specifics:
approx. 2 Hours
Please RSVP 2 days ahead of the training date with:
Name--Unit Number--Position Training For (Tiger/Wolf/Bear/Web/CM/Comm/PTrainer)
Helpful to do 'Online Training' ahead of time:
This Is Scouting/Youth Protection
If you do these online trainings and bring a copy of your certificates, we can present your 'Trained Badge' to you that day.
For BALOO
approx. 9-5pm
Please RSVP Mon. March 1
Name-Unit
For ODLS
approx. 5pm Fri-noon Sun
Please RSVP early, early. Patrols are set up a couple weeks ahead of time & some planning is done as Patrols before you even come to camp. Much more specifics will sent to you in advance, so please RSVP and get on the email list as early as possible.
Please watch the North Star Dist. Web Site for more details (meals) or changes. We'd like to think that we've seen enough snow for the season, but we have to be realistic, too. The Jan. Cub Specifics is a make up from an Oct. snowstorm-who knew!?! So, please RSVP and watch the web site if cancellations should have to occur.

Basic information about the various Cub Leader training courses:
New Leader Essentials Training (NLE): New Leader Essentials is the initial training for adult leaders. In this 90-minute training, leaders learn about the objectives of the Scouting program and the methods that are used to achieve these objectives. They also gain a basic understanding of youth development, as well as how Scouting is organized and financed, policies related to the program, and resources to help leaders succeed. The training is for all new registered adult leaders of Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, Webelos Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, or Ventures. A Scout leader needs to attend New Leader Essentials only once.
Cub Scout Leader Specific Training (CLS): Each Cub Scout leader completes the specific course for his or her own position in the program. These courses are: Cubmaster and Assistants; Pack Committee Chairmen and Members; Tiger Cub Den Leaders; Cub Scout Den Leaders and Assistants; and Webelos Den Leaders and Assistants. These training's include materials on pack organization, advancement, den and pack meeting program planning and your role within the pack. Leader-specific training is approximately two and one-half to three hours long. The leader is considered trained upon completion of New Leader Essentials and the Leader Specific training for that position. This level of training is required for all Cub Scout Leader awards.
Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) is a new course for one or more members of the Pack Committee in how to plan outdoor excursions and camping trips for Cub Scouts. This training is not intended as an overnight experience, but rather a preparation of the Cub Scout leader interested in learning about overnight camping activities.
A day of fun and learning prepares pack leaders to plan and carry out "entry-level" outdoor experiences, one that is safe and appropriate for Cub Scouts. Although this training is not required for all Cub Leaders, but at least one member of a Pack Committee must be BALOO trained in order for their Cub Scout Pack to be authorized to go camping. This training is not designed for Committee Chairman or Cubmasters but is instead focused on the Committee Member who will be in charge of Pack Camping.
The one-day BALOO session will give your pack's outdoor activity leader the tools to conduct a safe and successful overnight.
It is not a heavy skills program. The morning BALOO sessions include the why and how of Cub Scout camping — planning, equipment, meal preparation, and campfire programs. In the afternoon, Cub Scouters rotate among four round-robin sessions—fire safety, stoves, and lanterns; first aid and sanitation; nature hikes and games; and cooking. Scattered throughout the day are plenty of the four S's: songs, stunts, stories, and showmanship. With proper planning and your BALOO-trained leader, your pack should be set for a fun and exciting weekend event.
By completing this training course the participants will understand the focus of the Cub Scout level of the BSA program, acquire the skills and confidence necessary to plan and carry out a successful Cub Scout-level overnight activity, and increase their knowledge of the resources available from the BSA for carrying out this activity.
