2010 North Star District Spring Rendezvous
April 30th - May 2nd at Camp Iyataka
Something for everyone . . . . . . .
Again in 2010 the North Star District will hold its annual 3-day North Star District Spring Rendezvous at Camp Iyataka
. This event encompasses the district’s Spring Boy Scout Camporee, Cub Scout activities, the district’s Webelos Crossing-over ceremony, and the annual District Recognition Banquet . . . . . and more. The weekend will have something for everyone - Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, Explorers, and families.
The Spring Rendezvous . . . .
1. Provides Cub Scouts and their parents an opportunity to see what Boy Scouts is about, and to give them an opportunity to check out the troop(s) they’re looking at possibly joining.
2. Provides an incentive for Troops to put on a good “show” of camping, leadership, and other Scouting skills for Cub Scouts and their parents to view and learn from.
3. Provides an opportunity for those who have never been to Camp Iyataka to see what it has to offer.
Gives district leaders and other volunteers an opportunity to be recognized by their fellow Scouters, parents, and most importantly, by the Scouts themselves.
4. Provides an opportunity for Scouting families an opportunity to go camping, and mingle with other Scouters and parents from throughout the district.
5. Provides an opportunity for units and the District to meet and recruit new adults and Scouts.
Finally, it provides an opportunity to just get together as a district and have some fun!
This event will offer the following:
Boy Scout Spring Camporee - A Spring Camporee provides an opportunity for Boy Scouts to camp with their troops, learn and use Scouting and camping skills, and compete against other troops in the district. This is also where the O. A. call-out takes place, which is the first step in becoming a member in the Order of the Arrow.
District Webelos Crossing-over Ceremony - Cub Packs are encouraged to have their Webelos go through the district crossing-over ceremony (also known as “bridging” over) into Scouting. This annual ceremony involves crossing-over a real rope bridge, symbolizing the crossing over from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts.
Cub Scout Activities - Saturday events and activities geared towards Cub Scouts are being planned. Such events include plastic pop bottle rocket launching, archery range, BB gun range, leatherwork, noon foil dinner cooking, leather branding & tooling, whittling chip, tug-of-war, district Pinewood Derby race, etc.
Cub Scout Family Camping - Areas will be set aside for family camping . . . . either RV or tent camping.
District Recognition Dinner - The district’s annual recognition event to be a Saturday evening “lawn chair barbecue”. Scouts, Scouters, and parents will be able to enjoy a meal, meet folks from all over the district, be entertained, and take part in recognizing the efforts of the many unit leaders and other district Scouters who make the Scouting program possible in our district.
Campfire Program - When the sun begins to set, everyone is welcome to attend the traditional Saturday night camporee campfire, where troops will entertain everyone with skits, songs, (and who knows what else) and the annual Order of the Arrow Call-out Ceremony.
May Scout Leaders' Roundtable - The May Roundtable, originally schedule for May 13th in Webster has been rescheduled for 12:45 - 2:00 pm, Saturday, May 1st, as part of the Spring Rendezvous at Camp Iyataka.
"Scout Movie Night at the Bijou" - A new twist to the “drive-in” movie . . . but instead is a “hike-in” movie . . . complete with a theater-type concession stand, with popcorn, candy, and pop. Bring a couple dollars for snacks.
Ticket prices have been rolled back to 1910 levels . . . only 5 cents! This is the price that Baden Powell paid to get into the movies when Scouting started.
What better way to show how Scouting has changed over the past 100 years than by showing classic and/or recent Boy Scout movies outdoors on a big screen, where Scouts and Scouters can bring their camp and lawn chairs and enjoy a movie in a covered, outdoor theater. Be sure to bring a flashlight and a warm coat.
One or more of the eight following classic Boy Scout movies made between 1937 and 2009 will be shown: "Follow me, boys", "Scout Camp - the Movie", "Boy Scouts to the Rescue", "Tex Rides With the Boy Scouts", "Mr. Scoutmaster", "Henry Aldrich, Boy Scout", "Down and Derby", "759: Boy Scouts of Harlem". SCOUT MOVIES.pdf
"Scout Movie Night at the Bijou" is being planned for Saturday night, immediately after the campfire.

HELP IS ALWAYS NEEDED AND APPRECIATED: Putting on the Spring Rendezvous is no small task, and lots of volunteers are always needed for the various events and other aspects of the Rendezvous weekend.
As of 04/21/10 . . . . the Spring Rendezvous planning is coming together quite well. We still have a few manpower needs left to fill. If you can help us with any of the following, please let us know as soon as possible. Any of these jobs would look great on a resume.
____ 1 or 2 ticket takers for the lawn chair BBQ/Awards Event Saturday evening
____ 1 or 2 ticket sellers for the lawn chair BBQ/Awards Event Saturday evening
____ Entertainer(s) for the Awards Event Saturday evening (anybody play the guitar?)
Contact Dennis Helland at 886-6915, or by e-mail at
[Click for member's page] if you can help with one of the jobs above.

START PROMOTING SPRING RENDEZVOUS IN YOUR UNIT NOW! Units are asked to start promoting the North Star District Spring Rendezvous now, and to consider what event, task or portion of the rendezvous your unit’s leaders and parents can help with to make this a great much-anticipated district event each year.

Never been to Camp Iyataka? Click on the links below for maps.

FEE: Everyone - $10.00 - Includes insurance, camp facilities use fee, event patch, Saturday evening meal (lawn chair BBQ), awards, program supplies, & misc. expenses. For those coming only for the barbecue and Awards event, there will be a $5 meal fee.
REGISTRATION: Cub Packs and Scout troops, and Venture crews are asked to print out an Event Registration Form, which can be used to record who will be attending from your unit. To help provide and approximate number of people to anticipate, we would appreciate tentative headcounts from each unit by April 22nd of how many Scouts, leaders, parents, and siblings from your unit will be attending. This information is important in determining how many will be at the BBQ (This headcount date was changed from April 26th at the request of the cooking crew). Please e-mail your headcount to Steve Hall as soon as possible. Unit registration forms should be dropped off at the registration table as early as possible. Everyone is asked to check in at the registration table in the garage when they arrive so we can check your name on your unit's registration form. Units can settle up financially with the registrar as soon as everyone with the unit has arrived and is registered. Tickets to the BBQ will be issued to units as soon as everyone with the unit is registered and all fees are paid.
DISTRICT RESOURCE AREA: Tables will be set up in the garage where Scouts, leaders and families can get information about membership, contact information, advancement, summer camps, upcoming events, etc. If you've got a concern or question about any of the district committee functions, or Scouting in general, stop by the garage.
DISTRICT AWARDS EVENT: The district's top volunteers will be recognized and honored at a "lawn chair barbecue" early Saturday evening, May 1st, in the parade ground area behind the Lodge at Camp Iyataka - in the presence of fellow Scouters, parents, and the youth members of the district. Be sure to check out the district web page at District Awards for information about the that will be presented, and for a nomination form if you know of someone who is deserving of one of the awards. The deadline for submitting nominations is April 1st.
The cost of Saturday night's barbecue is included for those registered for the the Camporee or the Cub Day programs. For those coming only for the barbecue and Awards event, there will be a $5 meal fee. Meal tickets for the barbecue will be issued for everyone registered and paid.
Everyone is asked to bring their lawn chair for the awards event & barbecue, and a frisbee to use as a paper plate holder. You might also wish to bring a raincoat or poncho (or umbrella) just in case. Those who would like to set up a canopy or dining fly near the back of the seating area may do so.
BBQ meal tickets will be issued to each unit for the number of people registered with the unit. "No tickie, no eatie!"
CONCESSION STAND: The Iyatonka Chapter of the Order of the Arrow will be running a concession stand in the garage, which will be open periodically during the weekend. Proceeds for the concession stand go to fund various chapter activities.
FIRST AID: A first aid station will be located in the garage.
CAMPFIRE:- Following BBQ and the district Awards Event on Saturday, May 1st, everyone is invited to the Spring Camporee Campfire and Order of the Arrow Call-out at 8:30 at the Campfire bowl. Everyone is asked to meet at the main flag pole at 8:15 for the retiring of the colors.

For Scout Troops and Venture Crews, the Spring Camporee component of the weekend will be remain essentially the same as in the past, with the exception that they will be under scrutiny of curious Cub Scouts and their families. Also, Scouts will be playing to a much larger audience at the Camporee Campfire and Order of the Arrow Call-out ceremony.

As troops and crews will be under close scrutiny during the weekend by Cubs, Webelos, and parents, troops will need to put on the best show possible in their campsites, events, and in demonstrating Scout skills and leadership. Suggested activities include lashing troop site gateways, towers, and bridges.

Four vintage merit badges that will count toward rank advancement are being released for the centennial year only, giving Boy Scouts a hands-on opportunity to experience the exciting past of the BSA. Scouts will have an opportunity to work on these merit badges at the Spring Camporee.

Carpentry Pathfinding Signaling Tracking
In honor of the BSA’s 100th Anniversary, though, today’s generation of Scouts will get the unique opportunity to experience some of the activities their predecessors enjoyed. That’s possible thanks to the BSA’s new Historical Merit Badge Program, a set of four discontinued merit badges that today’s Scouts can earn
There’s one catch: Boys must start and finish all requirements within the year 2010. So if your guys built furniture for their patrol kitchen at last year’s summer camp, they can’t use that product for the Carpentry merit badge. And don’t delay—after Dec. 31, 2010, these merit badges will go back on the “retired” list.
NOTE: It will not be possible for Scouts to complete all of the requirements for these historic merit badges while at the Camporee. The merit badge sessions are to give Scouts a taste of what these special merit badges are all about, and hopefully whet their appetites for wanting to complete the merit badges within their units sometime between now and the end of 2010. Units will be responsible for supplying blue merit badge cards for those Scouts in their units wishing to be signed off on those portions of the merit badges that can be completed at the Camporee.
Below are the various Vintage Merit Badge stations and who is responsible:
Carpentry - Gary Sauer and Troop 33 of Webster
Pathfinding - Brian Rau and Troop 188 of Aberdeen
Signaling - Dean Kirkeby and Troop 23 of Clark
Tracking - Greg Grayczk and Troop 45 of Milbank
Another station is a noon troop-prepared buffet at the South Beach, with courses to be cooked either by Dutch oven, open fire, coals, reflector oven, baked in a cardboard box, or on a propane camp stove. Troops are to provide their own plates and utensils.
The "Iron Chef Cook-off/Troop Buffet" can consist of main courses, salads, desserts, bread(s), beverages, etc.
Last year, we had 108 Scouts and Scouters in attendance, so plan accordingly.
Below are the Troops and Crews in the North Star Districts. Troops are to forward your choice of menu item(s) ASAP to Dave Aman by e-mail or at 882-2608.

Cub Scout events will be start 10:00 am. Everyone is asked to assemble at the main flag pole behind the lodge at 10:00 am for a flag ceremony, greeting, and any last minute information.
Again this year, we will have open scheduling so folks can participate in most activities at anytime between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. If an area is busy, move on to the another one and come back later. To give everyone an opportunity to use use the BB gun and archery ranges, issuance of tickets for these areas is being planned.
__________________________________________________________________________________
The following are some of the Cub Scout events and activities that are tentatively being planned for Saturday:
*BB GUN RANGE – Pack 262 - A BB gun range will be set up for Cub Scouts to do target shooting.

Its an excellent activity for Scouts, leaders, and families to learn a useful outdoor/camping skill, while at the same time answer the questions, “What's for lunch?” and “When do we eat?” It's also a great opportunity for Cubs and parents to do something together. A cooking area with beds of hot coals will be set up near the garage between the 11:00 am – 1:00 cook and eat your foil meals.
