2010 Boy Scout 100th Anniversary Week
February 7-13, 2010
 Scout Sunday - February 7, 2010

The anniversary of the founding of the Boy Scouts of America on February 8, 1910 is celebrated each year during "Scout Anniversary Week."

In 2010 Scouting celebrates 100 years of service the week of February 7th - 13th, 2010. The North Star District is calling on all packs, troops, crews, and posts to help make this a memorable Anniversary.

Scouting Anniversary Week activities get underway Sunday, February 7th  with Scout Sunday.

Scout Anniversary Week offers our units a prime opportunity to take Scouting out to the people and really focus the spotlight of public awareness on the great things we're doing in their community. Units are encouraged to start thinking now about you thinking about ways your unit can capitalize on the Scout Anniversary Week opportunities.

All packs, troops, crews, and posts are strongly encouraged to organize an activity to celebrate Scouting's anniversary in a dignified and visible way. Many units worship together, perform a service project in a public area, or prepare static displays in store windows. Any act to show the presence and good work of our organization ensures that Scouting is perceived as a vital influence in our communities.

Add anniversary week activities to your troop/pack/unit calendar and coordinate with your chartering organization. Together, we can demonstrate the strength of Scouting and promote public awareness of the benefits Scouting Brings to the individual, community, and nation.

Here are a few local Scout Anniversary Week Ideas your unit can do:

Posters. Let every Cub Scout or den make posters to describe their program and the fun they're having. Put them up in prominent places around town (store fronts, public library, community bulletin boards, etc.). Always provide a name, phone number, website or other means that a prospective member or family can contact you about joining Scouting.

Window Displays. Virtually every downtown has a few vacant storefronts that could be utilized for Scouting displays during Scout Anniversary Week. Consider a Pinewood Derby track or a model campsite. Uniforms, handbooks, posters, props, equipment-whatever helps tell the Scouting story. If not in a vacant store, how about one where the owner lets you use his or her window for that one week?

News Blitz. Make sure that your local media outlets are aware of Scout Anniversary Week and that they have news bits or PSA's to run for you.

Take a Cake. Here's a sure-fire way to get in the newspaper: take a cake to the editor to thank him/her for the support the newspaper gives to Scouting and other youth programs. Have a Scout IN UNIFORM present the cake to the editor and take a photo of the presentation. Chances are high that the editor will run that photo and probably with a nice article to boot!

Unit Open House. Host a Pack or Troop open house and invite the community and prospective new members.

Blue & Banquet or Court of Honor. Packs are encouraged to schedule a Scouting Anniversary Party in conjunction with a Blue & Gold Banquet or Court of Honor during the month of February.

Other Scout Week Activity Ideas:

Conduct a service project for a chartered organization as a way of thanking them for their support of Scouting.

Hold a special flag-raising ceremony at a high-profile location in the community, or make a special presentation to the local school board, mayor, or city council.

Invite chartered organizations, supporters, police, fire and rescue personnel, and government officials to participate.

Have dens create birthday cards or handicraft items to display in store windows, school trophy cases, etc.

Make public appearances at worship services, service club programs, chartered organization events, city council meetings, parades, etc.

Conduct unit family events such as blue and gold banquets, courts of honor, parents' nights, alumni recognitions, etc.

Plant a tree in honor of the anniversary.

Use this opportunity for packs and troops to work together. This will also provide Webelos Scouts with an opportunity to work with the troop they will be moving into.
