Canoe Treks Offered

The Missouri River High Adventure Base (Mr. Hab) if offering two different types of canoe adventures for the 2008 Season. Our Standard week long canoe adventure, that we call the Journey, and a single 12 day event called the Five State Canoe Expedition.

The Journey

The journey is a seven day camp. You will spend the first day at base camp preparing for the next five days you will spend on the river. This trek explores the "wild and scenic" sections of the Missouri River. In-Camp preparations include: Leave No Trace training, Endangers Species Identification and Habitat, Canoe and Moving Waster Emergency Procedures, Map/Compass/GPS Instruction.

This trek features lots of great food - no dehydrated rations-, swimming, horseback riding, archery, tomahawk throwing, and other types of fun on the run. Each participant can keep of record of their training, discoveries and adventures in a leather covered journal they will make at base camp.

Mr. Hab is a Co-Ed friendly operation. Perfect for Venture Crews looking for a little out of the ordinary adventure.

Southern Stretch

This trek begins near Yankton, SD and ends at Ponca State Park in Nebraska (approx. 60 river miles).

Your trek will include a day hike to Ionia Volcano and while on Goat Island you may try your hand at tomahawk throwing and learn about tanning hides. As you float down the Might Mo you will be introduced to historic locations pertaining to Lewis and Clark. You will pass the area where Shannon got lost, Where the election of Patrick Gass took place (the first election west of the Mississippi), and many campsites Lewis and Clark used.

As you reach your final destination, Ponca State Park, you can swim, shoot archery, horse back ride, visit the new Interpretive Center, or just relax. The training, planning, discoveries and adventures can be kept in the journal participants will put together. Each will make a leather covered journal similar to Lewis and Clark’s, complete with paper and pen.

Northern Stretch

This trek launches near Fort Randall Dam and closes near Springfield, South Dakota (just over 50 river miles).

On September 8th, 1804 Lewis and Clark sailed past future Fort Randall. This fort was built in 1856 and was an active Army post until 1892. The remains of a chapel the soldiers built is all that can be seen. Your group can walk the old fort grounds and get a feel of how the soldier lived. Your group will also pass the sites where Lewis and Clark spent the day “digging for barking squirrels” and the location of the Yankton Treaty. Lewis and Clark camped in six spots along this stretch of the river.

One of your camp sites will be at Niobrara State Park in Nebraska.  At Niobrara you will have to opportunity for a hot shower and horse back ridding.
